The re-release of the 1986 Transformers movie is doing great!
In just one weekend, Transformers: The Movie grossed over 4.2 million dollars at the American box office. For comparison, the original release made 5.8 in the same territory. Adjusted for inflation, the 1986 release has generated 17.7 million dollars in today's money over its entire run.
A re-release that generates as much compared to the original box office is a testament to its enduring success over time. Although Transformers: The Movie did not perform well upon its initial release, it has gained a mythical reputation over the years. Moreover, it is likely that the passing of Peter Cullen has encouraged fans to hear him on the big screen once again, especially with his latest performance in the short film Optimus Prime: Awakening.
One can only regret that the film's distribution was so limited outside the United States. It ranks in the Top 5 of re-releases for 2026, 2nd among animated films, only behind the re-release of Cars (6.2M).
A film that is definitely timeless, having marked many generations of fans, and a tribute worthy of the legendary Peter Cullen.
