Quels changements attendent la gamme Transformers Studio Series ?

What changes are expected for the Transformers Studio Series range?

At the end of July, the traditional San Diego Comic Con took place, the major annual event for pop culture. As every year, Hasbro took the opportunity to reveal a number of new products. Following this, the manufacturer gave a long interview to the specialized site TFW2005, via Evan Brooks (designer) and Nate Purswell (brand manager). We will go through the main points to remember from this interview, with several important pieces of information for the future of the Transformers ranges.

  • Additional information on Scorn

As announced last year, Hasbro will release in the Studio Series range the 4 Dinobots from the Age of Extinction movie scaled with the base figures. This means they will be made in Titan format for the first two of them: Grimlock, recently released, and Scorn, the second revealed. Evan initially confirms that no engineering is shared between the two figures, and that the first has allowed for an even better realization of the second. Scorn will notably have a fully articulated tail on ratchet joints, unlike Grimlock, as it becomes his mass. Similarly, Scorn will be able to better open the dinosaur's mouth and turn his neck in spinosaurus mode, a greatly appreciated feature for the format.

  • New “Transformers Icons”?

Two of the surprising releases for 2026 are the “Icons” Optimus Prime and Megatron, transforming respectively into Autobot and Decepticon badges. Evan confirmed that from the start, these two characters were indeed chosen to transform into logos, with a more “casual” approach similar to collaborations with other brands targeting a very broad audience. If they achieve good success on a global scale, versions of Maximal and Predacon will be considered.

  • Transformers Animated and Prime in the Studio Series range?

From now on, the Studio Series range will aim for as much fidelity as possible to the represented universes. For example, if characters from Transformers series like Animated or Prime were to appear, they would not be subject to a “stylization” similar to what we have seen in the Legacy ranges, for instance. The goal will be to make them as true to their animation models as possible.

  • The change in philosophy of the Studio Series

This is part of a broader evolution of the philosophy surrounding the entire range. Initially, Studio Series was specifically dedicated to characters from the live-action films. It is worth recalling that we were in 2018, at a time when only the Bayverse existed for live-action films. Since then, we have seen not only Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One, marking a true diversification of cinematic projects. During this time without a new film between late 2018 and 2023, Studio Series has continued to expand: the animated film from 1986 (“SS86”) in 2021, video games (“Gamer Edition”) in 2023, and even concept arts in 2024. As if, inevitably, the range was calling to break out of its mold. It is in this logic that, as explained by Nate, we have seen the gradual disappearance of numbers on the boxes, to avoid discouraging new collectors (why start a collection that has already exceeded 100 figures?), but also to signal that Studio Series is becoming a global branding, focused on the entire franchise. Thus, “Gamer Edition” or even “Studio Series 86” will disappear, in favor of a unification of the range around the entire Transformers media released since 1984. From series to comics, through films and video games. Nothing is excluded.

  • Which G1 characters will soon be made in Studio Series?

All of this has led some fans to coin the term “SS84,” referring to the moment when G1 characters not appearing in the original animated film would start to be adapted into figures. The recent reveal of a Red Alert Studio Series goes in this direction. Evan explains that no “sub-range” similar to Studio Series 86 will be created. All G1 characters that will be made will simply be included in the standard Studio Series range, just like all the others. Since the entire cast of the animated film has been thoroughly explored, Hasbro will now focus on the seasons 1 and 2 of the cartoon, the 3rd, as well as…the Japanese G1 series. Yes, we can therefore hope to see very popular characters from the Headmasters, Victory, or even Masterforce animes arrive in the Studio Series range!

  • The return of War for Cybertron games?

Every year, the topic comes up, and every year, the answer is the same. Hasbro wants to bring back the War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games (among others) on consoles and PC to make them accessible to the largest audience. However, Nate and Evan are not the people in charge of these matters, mainly because they concern Activision, the game's publisher at the time, and Hasbro for licensing. Both parties know that the demand is strong, but they must find an agreement

  • Can we hope for a complete Nexus Prime?

Nexus Prime seems to have been a puzzle for Hasbro. While Nate and Evan assert that the recent announcement of combiner members for the character is not a reaction to mixed fan feedback on the figure, they cannot yet confirm whether or not we will get a “frame” (a skeleton) for the Combiner to assemble Nexus with its members without having to go through Superion.

  • Will we still see molds from the War for Cybertron trilogy?

While the third and final chapter of this trilogy of ranges, Kingdom, is already 5 years old, many figures continue to inherit molds from that time. While some fans complain about this, others remind that most of them were very good. As a new era seems to be opening for the Generations and Studio Series ranges, will we continue to reuse figures from these 3 toy lines? Short answer: maybe. Evan was quite evasive on the question, saying it was a “very difficult question,” citing the quality of these figures which, in some cases, has not much room for improvement. However, he confirms that ultimately, one day, all characters will need to be redone with all new molds.

This gives collectors something to think about before, probably, some big announcements at the end of the year, and a 2027 that will surely be marked by newness
