Less than a week after the death of Peter Cullen, Hasbro reveals to Transformers fans what was meant to remain a surprise until September 17.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1986 film, a new short film is being released: Optimus Prime: Awakening. This will feature the leader of the Autobots in what will be the ultimate performance of Peter Cullen, recorded earlier this year.
We do not yet know the story of these additional 12 minutes. What we do know, however, is that Frank Welker, the iconic voice of Megatron, will also be returning. He will speak for the first time since the passing of his long-time colleague and friend:
“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other. After all, it takes a perfect hero facing the embodiment of evil to create a great dramatic work. Peter's portrayal of Prime drew from his own beliefs: honesty, loyalty, and the constant will to act with integrity. That’s what facilitated our friendship. Taking on the roles of Megatron and Soundwave for one last story against Peter's Optimus in Optimus Prime: Awakening was a true gift. I will miss my friend, but his voice, heart, and values will forever be inseparable from Optimus Prime.”
Optimus Prime: Awakening is described as "a love letter" to Transformers fans and Peter Cullen.
An ultimate performance that will carry a heavy emotional weight. A final farewell to a legend of the Transformers franchise.
